Hurry
The piece is an arrangement of a popular song composed by Hugo Fattoruso, a great Uruguayan musician who composed hundreds of really beautiful tunes. On this arrangement, my idea was to use the elements on which the tune was based and just develop them more, trying to make them work for a bigger scale while maintaining the same proportions and character.

Esta pieza es un arreglo de una canción compuesta por Hugo Fattoruso, un gran músico uruguayo que compuso cientos de temas preciosos. En este arreglo, la idea es usar los mismos elementos en que se basa la canción y simplemente desarrollarlos más, tratando de hacerlos funcionar a una escala mayor manteniendo las mismas proporciones y caracter del tema.

Mujer soñando con la evasión / Woman dreaming of escape
This is the piece I love the most. The music is mainly inspired in Osaldo Puliese's work, Stravinsky's 3rd period and in Joan Miro's work. Some years ago, I wrote this extended piece as a final project for a class and I wanted to write a sort of abstract tango. At the same time life was going by, many things were going by in life...
I had the opportunity of traveling to Barcelona with Berklee as a student ambassador and in my free time I escaped to see Gaudi, Picasso, Dali and Miro's works.
Miro had the deepest impact on me. I felt I was witnessing his whole evolution. I spent a whole evening in his museum enveloped by emotion, and there discovered his painting: " Woman dreaming of escape".

Esta es la pieza a la que le tengo más cariño.
La música se inspira fundamentalmente en la obra de Osvaldo Pugliese, el tercer periodo de Stravinsky, y en la obra de Joan Miró.
Hace unos años, tenía que escribir una pieza extendida como proyecto final de una asignatura y andaba con ganas de escribir un tango más bien abstracto. Al mismo tiempo pasaba la vida, pasaban muchas cosas en la vida...
Como estudiante, tuve la oportunidad de viajar a Barcelona representando a Berklee y todos los ratos libres que tuve me escapé a ver la obra de Gaudí, Piccasso, Dalí, y la de Miró, que fue la que más me impactó en su evolución.
Pasé una tarde en el museo de Miró y en el medio de toda esta emoción encontré ese cuadro: " Mujer soñando con la evasión".

Chacarera para Greg / Chacarera for Greg
Probably the most feminine piece from this album, it is deeply influenced by the music of two female composers: Paule Maurice and Maria Schneider. I intended to express the spirit from the countryside dances, not only the "Chacarera", but also the "Malambo" and other countryside dances typical from Argentina and Uruguay in which dancers stamp their feet one after the other and people cheer them on by clapping.
The rhythm is pretty complex, based on a 2 against a 3. The piece tries to recreate all this tension among the layers of contrasting rhythms not only on the rhythm section, but also on the wind instruments. Finally, trying to push this concept even further in the flutes solo section, 3 delicate melodic instruments maintain this atmosphere with no rhythm section or accompaniment; but still with the same spirit and energy. Like a picture drawn with pencil before painting it, the essence is still there.
The music is pretty descriptive, starting with a dialogue between clarinet and flute that reflects how this dance is performed by couples. The woodwind trades express the stamping solos made by the male dancers and the flutes, the sounds of the countryside.

Probablemente la pieza mas femenina del álbum; tributo a la música de dos compositoras mujeres: Paule Maurice y Maria Schneider.
Traté de expresar aquí el espíritu de las danzas campestres, no sólo la chacarera sino también el malambo, y otras danzas típicas del interior de Argentina y Uruguay en las que los bailarines zapatean y los expecatadores agitan palmeando las manos.
El ritmo es bastante complejo, basado en un 2 contra 3. La pieza trata de recrear toda esta tensión existente entre las diferentes capas de ritmos no sólo desde la sección rítmica, sino también desde los vientos. Finalmente tratando de llevar este concepto hasta el extremo en el solo de flautas, teniendo tres delicados instrumentos melódicos tratando de mantener esta atmosfera sin seccion ritmica o acompañamiento; pero con el mismo espiritu y energia. Como una pintura dibujada con lápiz antes de ser coloreada. La esencia sige estando ahí.
La música es bastante desciptiva, empezando con el diálogo entre flauta y clarinete, imagen de la pareja bailando, la seccion de los "trades" de maderas, simbolizando los diferentes ejecutantes del zapateo uno tras otro y las flautas, expresando los sonidos del campo.

Miniatura cromática / Chromatic miniature
This piece is a tribute to Bela Bartok and Gustav Mahler's music.
It is a chromatic fugue that visits the 12 tones, making them one by one the center of small universes, and once it has visited them all it just folds itself in symmetrically.

Esta pieza es un homenaje a la música de Bela Bartok y Gustav Mahler.
Es una fuga que visita los 12 tonos, haciendo de ellos uno a uno el centro de un pequeños universos, y una vez visitados todos, simplemente termina invirtiéndose.

Candombe estirado / Stretched candombe
This one is a tribute to Duke Ellington, his crazy harmonies, the darkness in his music and his Africanisms, and to the Africanisms in the music of my own country.
Studying Duke Ellington's music, I found that there is a big common territory shared by his music and the traditional Afro-Uruguayan music.

Este es un homenaje a Duke Ellington, sus armonías locas, la oscuridad en su musica y sus africanismos, y a los africanismos de la música de mi país.
Estudiando la obra de Duke Ellington descubrí que hay un gran territorio en común compartido por su música y la música tradicional afro-uruguaya.

DEFG Blues
This composition is a variation of a piece that I always liked a lot, written by Bob Brookmeyer for Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Big Band in the 60's. His piece is mainly a chromatic blues. I tried here to push this concept a little further, using the row for building every single part of the piece.
For this piece, I took a row (F#,C,F,E,B,Bb, Eb,D,A,Ab,G, Db) and I built the whole piece based on this row, from the bass line to the harmony, voicings, etc. Possibilities to work with this material are endless.

Esta composición es una variación de una pieza que siempre me gustó mucho, escrita por Bob Brookmeyer para la banda de Thad Jones y Mel Lewis en los '60. Su pieza es más bien un blues cromático. Traté de llevar este concepto un poco más lejos, usando una misma serie de notas para construir cada detalle de la pieza.
Para esta pieza tomé una serie de notas (fa#, do, fa, mi, si, sib, mib, re, la, lab, sol, reb) y construí absolutamente toda la pieza basándome en esa serie, desde la líinea del bajo, la armonía, los acordes, etc. Las posibilidades para trabajar con este material son infinitas.
